“All right. The baked mac is almost done. You sure you don’t want another side? Vegetable maybe?” I asked Koni as I removed the next batch of chicken pieces from the skillet.

“Nah, this is plenty. I doubt there’ll be any leftovers, though,” he replied, rolling the last of the chicken into the flour mixture and setting it aside for me.

He’d been completely honest about giving me space after that last kiss. He’d helped me with dinner, following all of my instructions with barely any awkwardness at all, except for a few times I caught him staring at me, giving me bedroom eyes. And, wow, was that hard to ignore. The looks were fiery, making my body so hot I almost thought I was having another transition flare.

“Okay, if you think it’ll be enough. I know they’ll probably be starving.” Especially Zavier. I hadn’t seen him since the morning. He had to have had lunch at some point, but I was willing to bet his stomach would be near empty after shifting again and doing his assessment with Tim and Rosie.

“We’re always starving.” The grunt that followed his words made me shiver. He was definitely thinking about more than food. God. Knowing what was on his mind made me hot all over again. I stole a glance at him and was not disappointed by what I saw.

His eyes raked up my body, and his hand splayed over his stomach, rubbing a slow circle. I don’t think he meant for me to even notice, but I did, and the view was so sexy, I had to bite my lip to focus on dinner and not picture him doing the same thing in a bed.

“Hey!” Zavier’s voice broke through all my thoughts, and we both looked over to see him striding through the door.

“Hey!” Koni and I both replied as Loch and Elijah entered also.

“How’s it going?” Koni asked them, coating the last piece of chicken and dropping the tongs into the bowl. He didn’t bother moving away from me.

Zavier’s T-shirt and jeans were smudged with dirt, as were Elijah’s and Loch’s. They looked like they’d been playing in the woods in human form too.

“Good,” Zavier moved right for me, not stopping or hesitating even though the others were watching. “Fun. These guys are relentless.” His body pressed to my back while I placed the last of the chicken into the skillet.

I kept on my task, not wanting to call more attention to us by turning and kissing him like I really wanted to. I would play it cool. Despite what we’d been through in a few short days, it was still very new, and I wasn’t a fool. The Four’s relationships meant a lot to each of them. They had a bond, and it was solid. I didn’t want to rock that boat.

But …

Zavier leaned against me, dipping his face into the crook of my neck, wrapping his hands around my stomach, and inhaling long and deep. “Mmm. This smells so good.” And with a low whisper, he added, “You smell even better.
